Angie’s Hamburger Stand
I didn’t get to go to Dallas last week for my kids’ figure skating competition but that doesn’t mean I totally missed out on youth sports.
My niece, who lives about an hour south of Chicago, was in Canton this past weekend for the USSSA Great Lakes National Championship at the Canton Sports Center.
They got to town Wednesday night and played games on Thursday but were rained on Friday. That ended pool play and they were seeded number one in their bracket so they didn’t play until Saturday afternoon.
I don’t see my nieces very often. Usually just once or twice a year. Last year, my other niece played in this same tournament at a different level but she switched teams and played her Championships July 4th weekend near Indianapolis.
I had nothing else I needed to do Saturday and since I was home alone, I decided to head over to the East Side for some softball.
I ran through a pretty heavy rain shower between Jackson and Ann Arbor. I knew it would eventually catch up to me and the games would get delayed so I stopped and grab lunch on my way to meet my brother and niece at the complex.
I stopped at Angie’s Hamburger Stand on Michigan Avenue near Beck Road in Canton Township just west of where the sports complex I was headed to is located. The building is an old style 50’s shiny metal diner with simple signage that just says “Hamburgers.” While it *looks* like it could actually be a 50’s diner. That’s not the case. The building was actually buillt in the early 2010’s. There was some kind of commercial building on the property but it had been vacant for a while. This restaurant cleaned up the area, added the parking, and built the retro diner as it looks today.
The parking lot is actually really tight. There are a few spots in front and then a drive thru that wraps around the building. There was a pretty long drive thru line when I got there but I was able to squeeze in to a parking space. I was planning on just eating in since I had some time to kill.
The interior of Angie’s matches the exterior. The small restaurant is set up as a classic 50’s diner. It’s waitress service with short black padded stools bolted to the floor at a lunch counter looking in to the kitchen. The menu, which is mostly burgers with some chicken sandwiches and some Mexican options, hangs above the counter.
The only other seating in the restaurant is another counter style seating arrangement looking out the front window. There are no tables so even if you come with a family, you have to find some place to sit on the stools.
The menu called their burgers sliders which kind of confused me at first. I was thinking something small like White Castle but these were a little bigger and more of a smash burger type of sandwich than slider. I put in an order for a double cheese slider with bacon plus an order of cheese fries and a Coke. The cost came out to just a little over $13 which I paid for on my card.
The fries actually came out first. Not long after I had ordered the waitress brought out a plate filled with crinkle cut fries covered in a thick cheese sauce. There was also an option for chili cheese fries, which I probably should have done, but I was happy with these. Fortunately, the waitress also brought me a fork because these fries were covered in cheese. I would have made a mess trying to pick these up with my fingers. The cheese fries are pretty simple. It’s all prepackaged stuff, but it’s good and it’s a good sized portion. It’s about what I expect from a diner like this.
The Double Cheeseburger Slider was really somewhere between a slider and a fast food cheeseburger. The meat is smashed on the grill with onions…but since I don’t like onions, I asked if they could skip that step. I got the double cheeseburger so there were two smash patties and two layers of melted cheese. The rest of the sandwich includes ketchup pickles and mustard on a white bread bun that steams in wax paper while it’s brought to you. The sandwich is a very simple, very tasty burger. It’s got those great little crispy edges around the edges and a crunch from the pickles and bacon ($1 extra). I was debating on whether I should have ordered two of the burgers and the truth is, I probably should have. I didn’t want a huge meal before going to sit out in the hot sun watching softball so I didn’t but in a future visit, that would definitely be on my to-do list.
I had been looking forward to Angie’s Hamburger Stand all week once I found it on a Google search of restaurants in the area around the Canton Sports Center. The meal lived up to what I hyped up in my own mind. Everything is very simple but it’s very simply delicious.
