Time to Wing It
The next few weeks are going to be rough. J is traveling with the kids for figure skating competitions. I need to stay home and work because I’m running out of PTO. I’m also losing my officer colleague for a few weeks due to a commitment he has outside of work.
I’m already getting in to that fend for survival mode when it comes to meals. Being alone gives me time to go to restaurants I normally wouldn’t have time for.
I was in Battle Creek on a job assignment earlier this week by myself. The task was completed by about 11:30. Before leaving town, I wanted to grab lunch.
I picked Time To Wing in Battle Creek’s Urbandale neighborhood. The restaurant is on West Michigan Avenue and Geiger Avenue. The building is a standalone at the edge of a parking lot for a shopping plaza that includes a Family Fare. This uniquely shaped has been a donut shop for the better part of the last two decades. It was a Dunkin’ Donuts, Tom’s Donuts, Rock & Roll Donuts and now it’s a wing joint.
I was never in any of those businesses so I have no idea how the building was set up . Looking at pictures on Google though, it seems there was quite a bit of work done to turn some things around.
The restaurant is counter service. The order counter is to the right when you enter. Menu boards hang behind the counter from the ceiling. You can do traditional or boneless, tenders, or a chicken sandwich. They have a number of sauces ranging from mild to Ghost Pepper Buffalo.
There is a small dining room off to the side. The place definitely got a new coat of paint but the tile floors look to be the same. The dominant color in the building is orange. There’s not much on the walls. It’s a simple design with simple furniture but the place comes off very bright with very clean design.
I ordered eight traditional wings and fries which comes as a combo. I stuck with the Classic Buffalo sauce although I could have gotten two and yes, that Ghost Pepper Buffalo was tempting. It took about 10 minutes for the meal to cook and cost me right around $15.
I went really simple with just the regular fries. See folks, this is why I order online. I make bad decisions when I order in person. I should have gotten a different sauce on my wings and I should have tried one of the seasoned fries. They have Garlic Roman, Bold Ranch, and whatever Signature is. I stuck with plain and they were fine. They were crispy, they were tasty, but you know what, they could have used some seasoning. I always crumble under pressure when ordering live. I’m not mad at these fries. They were alright. I’m just disappointed in myself.
The wings I got really reminded me of Hooters in both flavor and texture. They’re not super crispy wings like Buffalo Wild Wings or WingStop but they’re really meaty, juicy, tender and full of flavor. The Buffalo sauce also had a very similar taste to what I remember Hooters tasting like. That’s not a bad thing, I always really liked Hooters wings. The eight wings were more than enough for a meal. As I’ve mentioned a couple of times, I really wish I would have been bolder and tried a hotter flavor but these wings were still tasty and still satisfied that Buffalo wing craving I constantly have.
Time To Wing It is a solid wing joint. I always like finding these local places that you can find tasty wings and get them quickly. Time To Wing It does just that.
