Kibby Cobb Liquor & Deli
I warned you. Back on the road for a couple of days.
This short trip was for work again. I’m still not done traveling for skating this month but this is the last work trip I have planned for a while.
I was meeting a colleague at the hotel we’d be staying at in Jackson around 11:00 AM. I got to town early because I wanted to grab something to eat. We were going to be stuck out kind of in the middle of nowhere Lenawee County for the day and wouldn’t really be able to eat until we got back to Jackson in the evening.
I did my usual thing and searched for “bagels” in Jackson. I assumed I’d get hits in Ann Arbor but I was shocked to find something that looked amazing to me off the beaten path near Jackson.
Kibby Cobb Liquor & Deli really is off the beaten path on the corner of Kibby and Cobb Roads in Summit Township just to the south and west of Jackson city limits. The party store with a deli hidden inside is part of a small shopping plaza called Kibby Cobb Plaza. The store shares the center with a few other businesses including Ironbark Brewing…which I probably should have went back to for dinner. The owner of the deli is also part owner of the brewery and you can get the deli sandwiches to go with your beers.
You immediately find the liquor part of the store when you walk in. There are very narrow rows filled with bottles upon bottles of alcohol you have to find your way past.
The deli is all the way to the back of the space. There’s a large counter with menus written on chalk boards behind it. There were several people taking phone orders and working the grill when I walked up.
There’s also a case full of New York deli style bagels which are made fresh in house.
It was still breakfast time so I kept it really simple and stuck to a Breakfast Bagel with bacon but the menu has so many other things on it that I would have ordered had it not been 10:00 in the morning.
It took about five minutes for everything to be grilled, wrapped up and handed over to me. I grabbed a couple of Pepsi’s out of the cooler then went to the front cash register to pay. The cost for a breakfast sandwich and a bottle of Pepsi was just over $11.
The Breakfast Bagel starts with choice of bagel. I went with the Everything. It’s filled with egg, American cheese, and meat. I picked the bacon which was super crispy, delicious bacon. My love for bagel sandwiches is fairly new but man do I love a breakfast sandwich on an Everything bagel. This one is so good and the bagel is so much better than the ones you find at bagel chains. This sandwich was just oozing with cheese that held the crispy, salty bacon on top of the folded egg.
When you talk about “hidden gems” or “off the beaten path” this has got to be the poster child. I would never in a million years found my way to this part of town without finding this place on a Google search for bagels. Kibby Cobb Liquor & Deli would be a go-to for me if I lived in this area. It’s so rare to find a place that makes their own bagels but not only do they make the bagels, they make delicious sandwiches out of them too.
