McMillan’s Deli
Alright. Trying to sneak in a blog from Southwest Michigan. I’m not even close to done traveling this month. Jackson and Ann Arbor this weekend. Kenosha, WI next.
Since we’re traveling so much, I don’t have a lot of extra cash to eat out for lunch during the week when I am here so that’s why we’ve been pretty light on actual Southwest Michigan blogs the last month or so.
Work sent me to East Lansing earlier this week. We used to be able to expense meals when we went to Lansing but I don’t usually do that on day trips. Besides, I had a place in Marshall I wanted to stop at.
McMillan’s Deli is on the east side of Marshall on Michigan Avenue at the intersection with Green Street. The small deli is inside Marshall Liquor. It’s not really obvious when you drive by the solid red building that there is food inside other than a few banner’s with the deli’s name hanging on the siding.
The store is a pretty typical convenience store. There are rows of snacks plus coolers full of pop and beer. There are also a lot of shelves filled with liquor bottles.
The deli is tucked in to a corner right as you walk in the door. It’s almost a squeeze to get back to the order counter with a cooler on one side and a shelf with a microwave and coffee pots on the other. The menu is hanging on the wall above the microwave and it includes grinder type sandwiches, pizza, and some burgers.
I put in an order for an 8″ pizza grinder and an order of fries. The guy who took my order said the fries take about 15 minutes to cook. The sandwich wouldn’t take that long. I wasn’t in a big hurry so I said it was alright. The cost was about $15 and you pay right there at the deli. I then went to the convenience store side and bought a couple of drinks while I waited.
Sure enough, about fifteen minutes later, my order was bagged up and handed over the counter. There is no place to eat in the deli so I headed to the car. I had to get to East Lansing anyway so that was my plan all along.
I started with the fries because they were easier to eat. The order is curly fries with a little bit of seasoning on them. Nothing fancy and pretty much just out of a bag fries but there were a lot of them and held me over for most of the drive.
It’s been a while but I’ve blogged in the past about how much I love Mancino’s pizza grinders. I was hopeful this would be a similar sandwich and it pretty much was. The sandwich is pretty much a pizza. It’s just sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni. The guy making the sandwich asked if I wanted any veggies but the answer was no. The sandwich is pressed then sent through the pizza oven which gives a really good crispy crunch. It’s not quite the same as Mancino’s but this is the sandwich I was hoping for when I ordered it.
McMillian’s Deli is kind of hidden inside this party store so it’s one of those “If you know, you know” places right now. I’ve seen some Facebook posts about the place and have been wanting to get there for a while. A trip to East Lansing was a perfect excuse to take a little detour for a tasty sandwich.
