Super Carniceria Las Palmas Food Truck
I just can’t pass up a taco truck.
My colleague and I were driving around one day last week and we came across a food truck in the Milwood neighborhood. We didn’t have time to stop but I made a mental not of it so I could go back later.
I had time for lunch a few days later. I wasn’t really doing anything so I clocked out for a while and headed out to find some tacos.
The truck I passed sits at the Super Carniceria Las Palmas on the corner of East Cork and St. Mary’s Street just to the west of Lovers Lane. The food truck is parked out front and kind of blocks the sign for the meat market if you’re coming from the west. The store has been there for seven or eight years. The food truck is a fairly new addition. This spot has a history of being a restaurant. It was a Hogzilla BBQ joint for a few years and a Little Caesars for many years before that.
I parked along the side of the building and walked around to where the food truck is. I’ve never been in the meat market before but I probably should have went in and looked around. I hear they have homemade chorizo that is amazing.
The menu is handwritten on sheets of pink paper and taped to the truck right next to the order window. I put in my usual order of four steak tacos. The cost was right under $15. I had cash so I just used that instead of asking if they took card.
It took about 5-10 minutes before I was handed a bag that seemed really heavy for four tacos. I grabbed it an headed back to the office.
When I popped open the box back at work, I realized why it felt so heavy. There was a lot of food. In addition to the tacos, there were a lot of extra veggies. It was almost like a side salad.
The tacos were pretty loaded. Each taco, consisting of two soft but crispy around the edges corn tortillas, was stuffed with a really tender steak plus the usual cilantro and onion. I had just had some really delicious tacos over the weekend from a place that didn’t give me hot sauce. Not an issue here. There was plenty of hot sauce. The tacos were some of the best I’ve had in Kalamazoo. From the tortillas to the steak, everything was soft and easy to bite through but it came with layers upon layers of flavor.
Man, I love taco trucks. I’m a big BBQ guy too but it feels like BBQ trucks oversaturated the market a few years ago. I don’t think that’s possible with taco trucks. While they all serve essentially the same thing, everybody does something just a little different. Super Carniceria Las Palmas has the advantage of being able to source their stuff from their market and it shows in the freshness and quality. I don’t know if they’re going to hit the road or keep it where it’s at, but if you see this truck, it’s probably worth a stop.
