You’re going to see a lot of wild travel over the next few blog posts.   I had a pretty busy week with two trips to Detroit and two trips to Chicago.   I’ll explain a lot more as we move along.

The first Detroit trip was last Wednesday.  I picked a co-worker up in Grand Rapids then we drove to Detroit for a few hours of work.

We had a few stops.  One in the area around the Detroit Institute of Arts.   The other was in Greektown.

We got done with what we needed to do around 11:00.  My co-worker asked if we were going to grab something to eat before heading home.   I told him if he was hungry, I had some ideas.

I headed to the Cass Corridor to fine the Pulp Fiction inspired Royal with Cheese.

Royale with Cheese is on Cass Avenue at the intersection with Willis Street.  The building is an early 1900’s two story building that was originally all one space but it was sectioned off and new entryways were added to make three different business around 10 years ago.  Royale with Cheese moved in to the northern most space in the spring of 2017.

The restaurant is fast casual style with an order counter right in front of the kitchen.

The menu was actually off to the side as you first walked in and it was annoyingly not displaying the whole menu at one time. It was showing half the menu on one screen that would rotate between the different pages and specials on the other. There is a QR code next to it and I ended up doing that because the menu was making me angry.

There are two dining room spaces to eat in. One is in the same room as the order counter. The other is just off to the right. The space has very minimal décor taking advantage of the old brick walls and concrete floors of the building. There is a mural painted on one wall depicting the scene from Pulp Fiction where Jules talks about ordering a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris…which they call a Royale With Cheese.

My order was the Kruncher. This halal burger patty is topped with Jalapeno Krunchers! Chips, roasted pepper chili queso, southwestern roasted corn, and a Cajun aioli. I wasn’t totally sure how this would come together but it was really delicious. I was expecting fried jalapenos but these were literally jalapeno potato chips. I wasn’t familiar with these. It was still pretty delicious and added a little bit of heat to the burger. There was a whole mix of flavors between the queso corn and aioli but it all blended together into really tasty sandwich.

I made my sandwich a combo and got fries and a Pepsi. You can also do combos with one of their Custard Shakes. My colleague actually did that but I stuck to the Pepsi.

The combos come with Royale Fries. These are wedge like potoates that are crispy around the edges but soft and pillowy in the middle. You get choice of seasoning and I chose the Fresh Herb and Garlic Parm. It was delicious but my car smelled like garlic all the way home. I ate these right away when they were fresh out of the fryer. These were really good fries enhanced by that garlic parm.

The cost for lunch was right around $15 and were back on the road in about 10 minutes.

I love a good burger joint and Royale with Cheese is just that. It’s fast food but it’s good food. It’s made to order and it’s a lot more interesting than the typical burger place. This is a great place to stop and pick up something real quick knowing you’re going to get a delicious meal.
