Roxie’s Breakfast & Lunch
One of the best things about Christmas in Kalamazoo is the Santa at Gull Meadow Farms. The first year the farm did Christmas, we happened to go out there to get a Christmas tree. They had Santa set up in the market area with out much fanfare. He was soooo good with the kids that we’ve gone back every year.
Things have changed quite a bit. Santa is now in one of the greenhouses and you have to get tickets to see him. J got up on a Saturday morning in November to make sure we could get in. It might be our last year doing so, so it was kind of important for us more than the kids that we still make the effort to go.
The only time we had available in December was the Saturday before Christmas. We got one of the first ticket slots at 10 AM because there was still a lot we needed to do that day.
My initial plan was to see Santa then go to lunch but L had volunteered to help out at a figure skating competition at Wings Event Center. We wouldn’t have time to eat lunch then get there.
So we got up a little earlier and went to breakfast instead.
I decided to head out to the east side of town since we don’t get that way often.
We stopped at Roxie’s Breakfast and Lunch on Gull Road near Eastland Drive. If you’ve been in Kalamazoo a while, this used to be a Michelle’s but like so many of the other EMA Enterprises properties, it was sold to an employee who rebranded it as their own. This *was* the first of two locations but the Vicksburg location closed down recently when the lease expired as the owners decided to put all of the focus in to this Kalamazoo Township location.
The parking lot is in the back of the building and the entrance is kind of on the side. The building has an odd layout compared to Gull Road which is kind of on an angle itself. We were happy to see the parking lot was busy but not completely full so we knew we’d be able to get a table.
The restaurant is set up with two dining rooms separated by a large entry area that also has the cash register. We were taken to a table in the dining room to the right. It’s been a long time since we actually ate at this Michelle’s so I don’t really remember what the decor used to be but this dining room looks pretty new with clean lines, wood flooring and neutral colors throughout made softer with light coming in through the big windows that line the outside walls.
My family loves breakfast. It’s the best time for us to eat out because we know there will be very few complaints from either kid and everyone will leave a little bit happier.
There’s a big menu of “Bennys” but I like to keep it simple and traditional with Benedicts. I picked the Traditional Benny that comes with two English muffins, poached eggs, grilled ham and hollandaises sauce. The plate was built with each muffin being it’s own thing. I asked for the eggs to be a little bit harder and they came out perfectly. There was still a little bit runniness to the eggs but it didn’t scatter all over the plate. I just love Benedicts because there are so many different texture and so many flavor profiles in every bite.
On the side, I got American Fries instead of the hash browns. These small, perfectly crispy potatoes were good enough to be a meal.
J picked the #2 from the Local Favorites section. This is a pretty simple breakfast consisting of two eggs, meat choice, hash browns, and toast. She got the eggs scrambled and the meat baconed. Simple but delicious breakfast.
We didn’t see it or we didn’t get a kids menu. Not sure which it was but B just wanted pancakes anyway. We ordered him one Bumpas Plain Pancake. It was huge and hanging over the side of the plate so we knew it would feed him. He really is pretty easy to please. Pancake. Butter. Syrup. The kid is easy to please.
We also got him a side of bacon because what’s breakfast without bacon?
L’s breakfast turned out to be kind of funny. She wanted a waffle but she doesn’t always eat a whole waffle. There was an option for half a waffle and we thought, “perfect.” The half a waffle was tiny. Like, smaller than a kids portion tiny. I don’t know what the full waffle is but we were definitely expecting a little more than this. She said it was delicious. It came with whipped butter and powdered sugar, but yeah…definitely thought it’d be a little bigger. B didn’t eat all of his pancake so he didn’t leave hungry. She also got bacon and toast which what she typically does for breakfast.
Our total for breakfast was around $55 before tip.
Roxie’s Breakfast & Lunch carries on the tradition of EMA’s great family restaurants. We all got a pretty good chuckle out of the size of the half waffle and will know not to do that again in the future but that’s just a minor set back. The food was delicious, we got it quick so we could get to Santa on time, and we had a great, hassle free meal out as a family heading in to the holiday rush.
