My main responsibility at figure skating competitions is making sure everyone is fed.

I’ve mentioned before, my family calls me DadDash. Yes, we could just use DoorDash but everyone wants something from different places so it’d get even more expensive than DoorDash already is.

Having the competition being at our home rink Wings West doesn’t get me out of food delivery duties. Everyone still needs a couple of meals throughout the day.

B was the only one skating at this year’s Skate The Zoo. We made L sit it out due to a knee injury. She’s still in the running for a shot in the National Finals of US Solo Dance and this is just kind of a competition for fun and to improve skills.

We got to the rink around 8:00 for B’s first practice session. I got his skates on and got him on the ice. J was actually the public address announcer for the morning session so once I got him going on the ice, I left to go get everyone breakfast.

It wasn’t surprising at all that B and L wanted different things for breakfast. L wanted Starbucks. B wanted Dunkin’

There are two Dunkin’ Donuts, or just Dunkin’, restaurants in Kalamazoo. The first one opened is on the corner of Whites and Westnedge. The one we usually go to is on 9th Street just south of N Avenue in Texas Township. The restaurant is part of a small shopping plaza right next to the Speedway before you get to I-94. The Dunkin’ takes up the first spot in the building as you come in to the parking next to the Speedway. It’s a pretty narrow space that includes a small outdoor dining area and a drive thru around on the backside past the Jimmy Johns.

We go to this Dunkin’ all the time. It’s B’s favorite place to get food from but we always use the drive thru. I was looking to link to Dunkin’ in a different blog post a while ago and realized I’ve never blogged about this one….because we never go inside. So I decided to go inside this time.

The restaurant isn’t very big as most people use the drive thru. It’s just easier.

There’s an order counter kind of shoved in the back of the space alongside the kitchen. There is a self ordering kiosk but that wasn’t working the morning I was there. The woman working the drive thru came up to the register to take my order.

Our order at Dunkin’ is usually pretty simple. B would live on Bacon Wake Up Wraps if he could. I got him two of those and a Strawberry Donut. I also got the Mike’s Hot Honey Bacon Breakfast Sandwich for myself. B didn’t want a drink and I actually forgot to grab a bottle of Pepsi from the cooler behind me so all we got was food. The cost was right under $13.

I had to go to Starbucks to get L’s breakfast and I had to get back to the rink so I grabbed everything to go but there is a small dine in area inside if you prefer not to eat in your car.

I unwrapped my sandwich as soon as I got back to the car. I was hungry and I was really interested in trying this on because I love Mike’s Hot Honey. The sandwich is a stack of hot honey bacon, egg, white cheddar and a hot honey drizzle on the brioche bun. It’s essentially a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with a little bit of that tasty hot honey. It’s nothing that will knock your socks off but a little bit better than Dunkin’s typical offerings.

B’s breakfast obsession is the Bacon Wake Up Wrap. He would eat these every day and probably for every meal if we’d let him. It’s a really simple flour tortilla with bacon, egg, and cheese. They’re pretty small and can be eaten in two, maybe three bites. I think they’re pretty good but also really simple. I’d rather have bread for my bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich but B loves it this way and will eat a couple every time we stop at a Dunkin’ for him. You can get them with other protein options but bacon is the way for B.

I wasn’t explicitly told to get him a donut, but again, I know his order. After he’s done with his wraps, he has to have a donut and it has to be the one with pink frosting and sprinkles. B has gotten in to watching The Simpsons reruns with me on Disney+ so even he recognizes this as a “Homer Simpson Donut” now. The pink frosting is actually strawberry which isn’t something I like but he doesn’t care. He wants the pink sprinkled donut every time.

Dunkin’ is one of those places that everyone will be happy with what they get. It’s a safe, easy way for us to get breakfast in the kids if we have to get on the road in the morning and it’s a treat B really looks forward to.

I really don’t mind being the “DadDash” at figure skating competitions and I’d really rather everyone get something they want so they get some kind of fuel in them. We were lucky with this competition there was a Dunkin’ so close. B got food in him before what turned out to be a very successful day of competition for him.
