It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to Battle Creek for work and even longer since I’ve been to Battle Creek and had time and the funds to grab lunch.

I got that opportunity earlier this week. I met a colleague in Battle Creek for a job assignment. We were done around 12:30 and headed back to Grand Rapids to finish up. I wasn’t in a super big hurry to get back to Kalamazoo and there is a place that opened recently I’ve been reading good things about.

And I was close enough to it to grab something to eat before hopping back on I-94

Chick and Chill opened in the Capital Centre Shoppes on the corner Capital Avenue SW and Mason Road near the end of May. The small restaurant is in the same shopping plaza as the Marco’s Pizza just north of the Capital Avenue interchange with I-94.

The restaurant is mostly carry-out that specializes in wings, burgers, and Philly steaks. There is an order counter in the traditional fast casual set up but they also do online ordering. I was out by the airport so I put my order in when I got in the car then headed over to get it.

The restaurant is pretty bare but there are some tables and seats along each wall. There’s not much but it is an option. There was a line of bags for carry-out behind the counter when I got there so I assume most people do like I was doing and grab it to go.

My order was for the 6 Wings combo which comes with fries and a drink. The cost was a little over $11 and it was waiting for me when I got to the restaurant about 10 minutes after I ordered.

I don’t know why but I was expecting whole wings. These are actually Buffalo wings that are breaded and come with choice of sauce. I picked the hot but there’s also an extra hot flavor and also about 20 other choices that aren’t as spicy. The wings were pretty small but they pack a lot of flavor. Even after a bit of a car ride, the breading stayed pretty crispy and it clung to the hot sauce.

The fries, while not much, did kind of make up for the size of the chicken. There were a lot of fries in the to-go container so I didn’t walk away from the meal hungry. The fries were very simple, frozen restaurant supply store fries. There wasn’t any option for seasoning or anything and the could have used a little something.

Overall, not a bad meal. The taste of the wings were on point. They just weren’t the biggest, juiciest wings out there. I can’t complain about them though because the price was actually really good for a meal. I walked away full and happy with my choice. Some minor tweaks (some kind of seasoning on the fries) would be good but Chick and Chill will still be an option for me whenever I’m on this side of town.
