I think I’ve been to Hopkins twice in my life. One of those times was literally just to pick up a pizza. I was bored and not in a hurry to get home so I got off US-131 and headed Hopkins to pick up a pizza from Russo’s. It was worth the little detour.

I got sent to Hopkins last week for an assignment. I was leaving Kalamazoo with plenty of time so I looked up someplace to grab something to eat before heading to my work location.

There’s not a lot of places in Hopkins but one of them jumped out at me. It was pizza again but in a gas station in the middle of town. I couldn’t pass this place up.

CD’s Quick Mart is on Main Street in I guess what you can consider downtown Hopkins. The convenience store/gas station is a large red building with gas pumps near the road. The gas station canopy proudly displays “Home of the Vikings” which is the nickname of the nearby high school.

The store is set up like most convenience stores. It has all of the drinks and snacks you’d find anywhere else. The difference is they have a case of fresh made sandwiches next to the kitchen…..

…and slices of fresh, home made pizza next to the cash register.

I took a pretty big chance by not ordering ahead. I didn’t want a whole pizza so I was hopeful they would have slices. They did. I grabbed two slices of the Meat Lovers pizza and I grabbed a sandwich. I was hungry but I knew if I’d order a whole pizza I’d eat the whole thing and I didn’t want to do that. The cost for the two slices of pizza, sandwich, and a Pepsi was just a little over $12.

I got to my job site and started with the pizza. These slices are thick. The crust is really thick but also very light and airy. The slices are topped with a thin layer of sauce, a lot of cheese, plus pepperoni, ham, sausage, and bacon. It was probably a good thing I didn’t order a whole pizza. I would have eaten the whole thing. This type of pizza isn’t usually my thing but the toppings were piled on this slice making it irresistible. I don’t like this type of crust but I do like it when there is an overload of cheese and meat.

The sandwich I picked up was a pretty simple 6″ sub. The cold ones they have already done just have meat and cheese. You can actually order subs that are much more complex than this. The sandwich was an Italian combo with a couple different kinds of meat and provolone cheese. It’s a great grab and go sandwich.

CD’s Quick Mart is a great small town convenience store. This is the kind of gas station pizza I live for in a small town. It’s a solid pie that’s very filling. It’s nuts how the small town of Hopkins has two really great pizza options practically right across the street from each other.
