Butler’s Breakfast & Lunch
Yay. A Kalamazoo area blog post!
J and L are heading to Dallas tonight for a figure skating camp. I have a hard time getting off work in time to get B from after school care so it was just easier for me to take the whole day off. I had some things I wanted to do and I decided B and I were going to drive to Illinois tonight to see my parents.
I still had to get my butt out of bed to get B to school. Normally, I’d just go back to bed but I’ve been wanting to go out for breakfast. I’ve tried the last couple of weekends to go out Sunday morning before the kid’s needed to be at Wings West for skating but I sleep too late and it’s really hard to get people motivated to do things in the morning.
I got B to school then hopped in my truck. I had the time and no one to argue with me so I was going to go get breakfast.
I drove across town to Butler’s Breakfast & Lunch on the corner of Sprinkle Road and Vanrick Drive near Wings Event Center. The restaurant has been a breakfast joint for as long as I can remember. It was Derks Restaurant when we first moved here 15 years ago. After that, it became a Michelle’s. Just like Roxie’s Breakfast and Lunch, the restaurant was sold to an employee of Michelle’s and they made it their own.
The restaurant has the same basic layout that Michelle’s had but there’s a new coat of paint on the wall and some updated decor.
There’s a large lunch counter right inside the door past the hostess station. I was dining alone and considered just eating there but the way people were spaced out was kind of weird and I didn’t really want to sit next to a stranger.
There are two dining rooms. One on either side of the entry way. They only had one side open and when I walked in, the waitress told me to grab a seat wherever and she’d follow me with a menu. I saw an open booth in the back corner so I headed there. She was right behind me with the menu then went and grabbed me a Coke while I looked over the menu.
There’s a lot of great stuff to choose from including a number of yummy sounding Benedicts…which is one of my favorite breakfast foods…but I was in the mood for the Steak and Eggs.
The plate is a 9 oz grilled steak with three eggs, hashbrowns and toast. I ordered the steak medium, the eggs over medium, the hash browns crispy and the toast white. The eggs were pretty runny and used everything else on the plate to soak up the runny yolk. The hash browns were nice and golden brown on the top and soft, but still cooked all the way through. The steak had a slightly pink center and a delicious salt and pepper crust. I always have the lowest of expectations for breakfast steak and this one blew that away.
When the waitress asked me about toast, stupid me just said, “Yes.” She meant what kind. I kept it simple with white toast. I could have used a little more butter but other than it was tasty twice cooked bread.
The bill before tip was about $22 and it’s paid at a cash register near the entrance. The Steak & Eggs was the most expensive thing on the breakfast menu but that’s what I was in the mood for today.
People lost their minds when Michelle’s closed without taking the time to read that this place would be reopening with a new name but a lot of familiarities. Butler’s Breakfast & Lunch keeps the traditions of Michelle’s alive but does some of their own things too. It’s a solid breakfast joint in a part of town where there’s not a lot of non-fast food options.
