Wingstop (Oshtemo Township)
I’ve mentioned how expense figure skating is, right? A couple times?
I’ve been trying to pick up some extra work so we’re not stretched quite as thin. I’ve found something I can do a couple of times a month on weekends and that gives us a little extra padding when it comes time to pay for competitions and ice time.
I had to work last Saturday evening. It’s only a few hours but pays pretty well for what I do.
Saturday was kind of a lazy day. We were out pretty late Friday night and everyone slept in on Saturday. J had to run some errands before I went to work in the early evening and she brought home Chick-Fil-A for lunch. When I got done for the night around 10:00, I was pretty hungry and craving wings.
Lucky for me, there’s a couple of Wingstops in the Kalamazoo area now.
I chose the Oshtemo Township Wingstop location. It’s on the corner of West Main and Drake in the West Century Center. The small storefront is on the southside of the parking lot in the space that used to be Let’s Swirl Froyo.
I put my order in online before I left the parking lot on the east side of town. I figured it would take me about 15-20 minutes to get back to West Main to pick up my food.
I got to the shop and there were a number of Dashers waiting to pick up orders. I walked up to to the order counter and told the person who acknowledged me in the kitchen I was there to pick up an online order. There were a few bags on the shelf and he looked through them looking for my name. It was there so he handed me the bag and a cup to fill up at the fountain before I left.
It seems like the majority of orders are either carry-out or delivery, but there is a small dining area. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone actually eating in at a Wingstop. It seems the tables are usually used to wait for orders that aren’t ready yet.
My order was for the Large Wing Combo. That includes 10 wings, fries and a 20 oz drink. The cost was right around $17.
When I got home, I started with the fries. I actually added cheese sauce to them for an extra buck and the Parmesan fry season for an extra $.10. The fries are delicious fresh cut fries that have a crispy exterior and that light, fluffy inside. There was a lot of cheese sauce spread on top which did make the fries a little bit soggy. That was fine. I was at home so I grabbed a fork. There are a lot of fries in the order too so even though 10 wings doesn’t seem like enough, they make up for it with fries.
I divided the wings up in to groups of five. I got one half with Hot Buffalo and the other with the Louisiana Rub. I typically do Garlic Parmesan but I wanted to try something different.
I started with the Louisiana Rub wings. I know people throw a fit about the size of Wingstops wings but they’re not as bad as some people make them out to be. They’re not the biggest wings you can get but they do a pretty decent job of balancing cost with the size of the wings. Yes, it’s possible to get bigger wings at other places in town but I also feel like you’re going to pay quite a bit more.
The Louisiana Rub is a dry rub is held on with a little bit of butter. The rub is comprised of some garlic and Cajun spices. I didn’t really get any heat from it at all. It was good, but I was expecting a little more of a Cajun kick. I like dry rubs a lot because they’re a little bit less messy. These wings were good but probably won’t become a staple in my rotation.
The Hot Buffalo wings are hot, but not too hot. I crave Buffalo sauce pretty much every night. I don’t know why but it’s a pretty recent thing. The Buffalo sauce from Wingstop always satisfies that craving.
I’ll say it again. There are options for bigger, meatier wings in town but I don’t think you’ll find them for this price. The last few wings I’ve eaten out and gotten wings, it’s been over $20 just for a basket of chicken. At Wingstop, you can get wings and fries for less than that. There’s an abundance of flavor options and it’s a fairly quick meal.
I’m happy we finally have a carry-out wing place in town…with online ordering. It’s something we’ve needed in Kalamazoo for quite some time. There have been a few tries but a stable chain that can offer tasty wings is a good option when I don’t feel like going to a bar.
