Tasty Twist
So, I thought I was going to bribe the boy to eat lunch by offering him ice cream. I hate doing that, but also, we were heading to Michigan State University so I wanted to go to the MSU Dairy Store.
It didn’t work. He still didn’t eat his lunch, but J and I still wanted to go to the Dairy Store, so we went to the Dairy Store.
Great idea….if it wasn’t winter break. The Dairy Store was temporarily closed. Now we had promised everyone ice cream so we had to find something else.
It’s January in Michigan. How many ice cream places are actually open?
There’s at least one in East Lansing.
We headed towards Tasty Twist on Grand River Avenue near Stoddard Avenue across the street from MSU’s main campus. The small ice cream shop shares a building with a Korean take out place. It’s right next to the pretty popular with college kids Bell’s Greek Pizza. It’s a little bit of a dated building but it’s easy to spot with a large blue awning with the white Tasty Twist lettering right above the door.
The shop is a pretty typical ice cream place. There’s a large counter with various ice cream making machines behind it and then case of scoopable ice cream at the end. The lone employee was sitting on a stool near the ice cream counter when we walked in and didn’t notice us right away. We walked over and started looking at ice cream until we got his attention.
The kids still really like getting scoops. The ice cream they have is Ashby’s. We let be get the smallest cup possible because this kid still struggles to not get ice cream all over himself.
B stuck to his regular. He got Superman. He usually does Blue Moon too but we kept it to one scoop so he wouldn’t make as big of a mess.
J got a couple scoops of ice cream and shared with L. She didn’t want her own but ended up taking bites of everyone elses. I always forget to write down what J orders and since she doesn’t always get the same thing. I never remember what it is.
I’m usually more of a soft serve guy. I picked a Twister(their take on the Blizzard) and got cookie dough as the candy. I thought maybe L would want some of it as cookie dough is her favorite too, but I think she only took like one bite and went back to whatever she was sharing with J.
The bill for our ice cream was right around $15.
It’s always hard to write about ice cream places because most of them are pretty much the same. Tasty Twist is pretty much the same. There’s nothing really special about it but there doesn’t need to be anything special about ice cream places. It really all comes down to your preference when it comes to what kind of ice cream is being served. My kids don’t care as long as it’s ice cream and I feel like that’s a pretty common feeling.
