It’s Santa time!

We have been going to Gull Meadow Farms to see Santa since they started that tradition several years ago.  At first, they had him in the Market building and you just showed up.  There was never much of a line and they have the absolute best Santa.

After a couple of years, it caught on that they have the absolute best Santa and it became much more of a thing.  Now, you have to buy tickets in advance to reserve a spot and Santa is in one of the Greenhouses in a whole Christmas trail experience.

The tickets sell out fast.  We only have one…maybe two years left that both kids believe so J makes sure to get up and order tickets the moment they go on sale.

Our slot was for 12:30 PM last Saturday.  We’re not early risers so we didn’t want to be forced to get up and rush.

I wanted to hit breakfast before Santa.  There are several diners on the east side of town and Richland that we haven’t been to yet so this was the perfect opportunity.

The Roosters Call is one of those restaurants that have been around for a while but we’re rarely on that side of town so we’ve never been.   The restaurant is in an old Pizza Hut building on Gull Road east of 26th Street kind of across from the Walmart in Comstock Township.  The building is the iconic Pizza Hut building that used to have the red roof.  It’s green now but it still has the shape.  Once Pizza Hut moved out, Jaspare’s Pizza moved in.  When they moved down Gull Road, The Roosters Call took the spot sometime in 2017.

We pulled up right around11:00. There were people waiting outside and we all got a little nervous. We almost headed back to Roxy’s for breakfast but I decided to go see what was going on. Those people were just outside waiting for someone. There was plenty of room in the large dining room.

That dining room still gives off Pizza Hut vibes to me…and that’s not a bad thing. That’s nostalgia. Obviously it’s been a real long time since I’ve been in a Pizza Hut like this building used to be…maybe it’s the windows, I don’t know. It’s probably the gingham curtains. The booths were long gone and the space is filled with tables sitting on top of a hardwood floor. Most of the light comes in through those large, oddly shaped windows that open up the dining room to the outside world on two sides.

Something Pizza Hut definitely didn’t have was the lunch counter. There’s a big bar like area near the kitchen with stools. That area was packed with people enjoying a cup of coffee and each other’s company.

The menu wouldn’t surprise anyone. Pretty standard breakfast favorites.

I ordered the Eggs Benedict. It’s a typical Benedict with English Muffins, ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. I don’t know how I ever got turned on to Eggs Benedicts but it’s become my favorite breakfast. This one was tasty. It came with hash browns on the side. They were super crunchy on the outside and cooked really well through the middle. It didn’t take me very long to clean my plate.

J got the Egg Combo with two scrambled eggs, hash browns and choice of pancake or toast…she asked for both then added on a side of bacon. She likes her hash browns and bacon well done. Both were. The scrambled eggs were nice and fluffy.

L was really the winner here. She saw a special for a Cinnamon Roll waffle and ordered that. She loved it. She’s been asking when we can go back to The Roosters Call for breakfast because it was soooo good. She wouldn’t even share a bite with the rest of us. She also added on toast and bacon because that’s her breakfast go-to staple. She didn’t realize she was going to like this waffle as much as she did. Typically, she won’t eat the whole thing and falls bacon on the bacon and toast. She didn’t have to with this one. It was amazing….but it’s one of their rotating waffle specials so it’s not on the menu all the time.

B got a pancake and bacon off the kids menu. He must have been hungry because he pretty much cleaned his plate as well. He’s notorious for saying how great something is then asking if he can “be done” after a few bites. He knocked off almost all of his plate before the dreaded “Can I be done?” question even came up.

As you can see, we like to add on extras to our meals, so it was a pretty expensive breakfast coming in around $60.

The Roosters Call is another solid breakfast joint. We had a great experience and a great meal. Plus, we got out of there with plenty of time to make our slot to see Santa just up the road at Gull Meadow Farms.
