Hungry Howie’s (Marshall)
My work takes me all over southwest Michigan (and beyond). It’s always odd to me how much time I spend in Marshall though. It seems like there wouldn’t be a ton of work for me there but it also seems like I’m in Marshall every couple of weeks.
I have some go-to places for lunch. I like Pastrami Joe’s and Dark Horse Commons for quick meals. Sometimes, those just aren’t quick enough though.
It’s almost never out of my way to stop at PS Food Mart right off I-94 on US-27. I usually need gas and a Pepsi anyway and that’s the quickest way to solve that problem before heading back to Kalamazoo.
I am the king of gas station meals. I eat a lot of crappy hamburgers, Tornados, Slim Jims and deli sandwiches.
This particular gas station has a pizza shop built in. It’s not one of those ones that are tucked in to a shelf where they reheat pizzas and throw them in a box. It’s a full on Hungry Howie’s.
The Marshall location of Hungry Howie’s is inside the PS Food Mart on US-27 just to the south of the I-94 interchange on the north side of Marshall. The restaurant has it’s own entrance plus access from the gas station. While the stores are connected, you do have to pay for anything you buy from the gas station at the gas station cash register and anything from Hungry Howie’s at the Hungry Howie’s register so you can’t get a bag of chips and candy bar with your pizza unless you make two transactions.
I stop in this gas station a lot but I’ve never gotten anything from Hungry Howie’s. I’ve never wanted to wait. Turns out, you don’t have to.
My co-worker actually got the idea to get something to eat and was a little surprised when it was kind of a hot and ready situation. I saw that he already had his food by the time I came out of the restroom so I skipped my usual bottle of Pepsi and a Slim Jim.
There is an order counter at the western most end of the building. There’s a sign next to that counter with Combo’s. I ordered the #1 which is a pepperoni Howie Roll with Howie Bread and a 20 oz. pop. The cost was just under $7 and I was surprised by how much food I got.
There is quite a bit of dine in space but we had to get to back to Kalamazoo to get to our next job assignment. I grabbed my food and a Pepsi out of the cooler and we hopped back in the car.
When I got to a place I could eat, I started with the Howie Bread. You can’t go wrong with bread sticks. These are covered in garlic butter and Parmesan cheese. It’s an order of 6 so half the size of a regular order. There was a marinara sauce cup for dipping but I like garlic parmesan bread on it’s own.
The Howie Rolls are kinda like calzones. Pepperoni and mozzarella is rolled up in pizza dough and baked. There is also a cup of marinara for dipping since there isn’t any sauce inside the roll. The roll had a delicious garlic butter and parmesan crust that came out of the oven slightly golden brown. I wasn’t sure what I was getting in to when I ordered this but the price was right and it sounded delicious.
We order pizza from Hungry Howie’s occasionally but I’ve never had one of these rolls before. This is a perfect lunch option and it’s super cheap. I don’t know if all locations do this or just this one because it’s in a gas station but this is going to become a go-to when we stop for gas at the PS Food Mart #1034
