I wasn’t planning on going to Detroit last Monday night but about a week prior, I got a phone call asking if I could work in Detroit that night. I never turn down trips and knowing there would be quite a bit of overtime associated with it, I of course jumped at opportunity.

It wasn’t as simple as just going to Detroit for the night. I actually had to go pretty early and make a stop in Troy first then I had to come back to Brighton to pick up a co-worker before heading in to the city for the night.

The plan was to meet my co-worker in Brighton at a Park and Ride lot right off I-96 at about 2:30. I made my trip to Troy to get what I needed then got back to Brighton at about 1:45. I needed to find a restroom and get gas so I headed in to Brighton to find that.

While I was sitting at the gas station, I started looking for some place to quickly grab a sandwich. What I found was a party store on the edge of town that brags about their sandwiches. That was enough to sell me.

Woodland Party Store is on Grand River Avenue north of Brighton proper and north of I-96 in Brighton Township across from Woodland Lake. The party store looks like most party stores. It’s nothing fancy and has a red awning letting you know where you’re at. That awning also brags about “The Best” sandwiches….so I knew I was in the right place.

Woodland Party Store also looks like a pretty typical party store on the inside too. There’s are coolers along the walls with a variety of beer and drinks. The floor space is taken up with shelves to buy snacks to go along with all those drinks.

Where this place differs from a typical party store is the deli case located next to the cash register. There’s a chalk board hanging behind the counter with a big list of sandwiches and the case is filled with Boar’s Head meats. There’s a lot of deliciousness to choose from.

An employee saw me looking at the chalk board and came over to ask if I wanted something. I asked for a #16 which is the Pastrami sandwich. I chose the Marble Rye for the bread and went with the warming it option. I was handed a hand written ticket with my order on it to take to the cash register to pay. I grabbed a Pepsi from the cooler to wash it down and paid just under $15.

There’s really no place to eat inside and I didn’t want to try to eat while driving because I knew I would end up with mustard on my shirt so I just went back to the car and unwrapped the sandwich on the hood of my car.

The Pastrami Sandwich comes with Top Round Pastrami, “gold label imported” Swiss cheese, tomato, onion, and Boar’s Head spicy mustard. I love a warm pastrami sandwich with Swiss and mustard. I don’t need the other veggies and took them off after a bite. They probably do more to hurt the sandwich than help. Boar’s Head meats are so good on their own. Just give me some good spicy mustard and a good Marble Rye bread (Woodland did both here) and I’m pretty happy.

I really just wanted something quick and simple when I started looking for a place to eat in Brighton and this was exactly that. It was quick. It was simple. It was delicious. I don’t always feel like a big, heavy meal and I look for places like this.
