Lou’s Market & Deli
Weird situation. I needed a notary public…and I really had no idea where to find one.
My uncle passed away last year and his son bought the farm that had been in our family for decades. When they were making the sale, they realized my dad owned the first 30 yards of his 1/4 mile driveway. No one has any idea why my dad owned that small strip of land. He owns farm fields around that area but he doesn’t own the fields on either side of the lane.
Anyway, all of my parents property already belong to my brother and I so we had to sign off on the transfer. I got the paperwork from the lawyer but I needed a notary.
Luckily, J works with one.
I was home because B woke up sick and J had meetings in the morning. By afternoon, B was feeling better and J was done with her meetings. I asked if we could use her co-worker to get this document signed and get it in the mail.
B and I drove to Vicksburg and got it done. It was around lunch time and J hadn’t eaten yet. She suggested we go over to the nearby deli and grab something to eat. I hadn’t eaten yet either and I thought that was a fantastic idea.
Lou’s Market & Deli isn’t really new to Vicksburg. The former IGA grocery store sits on the corner of Highway Street and Davis Street right across from Vicksburg High School. The building has been a popular spot for chicken for years first at Finks and most recently as The Dawg House. But now it’s under new ownership and a new name.
The idea of Lou’s Market & Deli is pretty similar to what it has been for quite a few years. It’s mostly a deli with a few pantry items, drinks, and (soon maybe) beer. The order counter is in the back of store and you can smell the fried chicken as soon as you walk in the door.
The chicken has always been why I’ve stopped at this place. It’s sooooo good. They have chicken ready but you can also order bigger quantities.
If you don’t like chicken they have other options. You can build a sub sandwich and they have soup specials which are typically posted on their Facebook page alongside the daily specials.
And, of course, there’s deli salads so there are clearly a lot of options and a lot to try.
I asked for two chicken breasts and the lady putting the box together asked if I wanted to meal. I had no idea what that was but I said yes anyway. It came with two sides for $9.99. I picked the potato wedges and mac and cheese for my sides. J got a chicken strip meal and we got B two chicken tenders and some ranch dressing. With a couple of drinks included, our meal was right around $30 and there was a lot of food.
J had to get back to work and I really shouldn’t have been out of the house with B so I dropped her off at work and we headed home. There is a dine in spot though with a half dozen tables. Most of them were being used when we were in there right around noon.
I started with the potato wedges when we got home since they were already starting to get cold. The wedges were pretty standard wedges with a little bit of seasoning on the outside. They still had a pretty nice crunch on the outside and the inside was pillowy and soft.
The mac & cheese was kind of the surprise in my meal. The macaroni noodles were covered in a thick, very cheesy sauce. This was much better than I expected for what is essentially a grocery store deli mac & cheese.
Now to the chicken. I really like this chicken. The two pieces I got were breasts and they were pretty big. They were super juicy on the inside and covered in a crunchy salty breading. I was so made when I was done with these pieces of chicken because it was gone. It’s the type of chicken I could eat a whole 8 piece bucket by myself and still want more.
We only got B two chicken strips but he was hungry just for one. The chicken strips are really good as well. They’re pretty large pieces with that same breading used on the rest of the chicken. I ate B’s second one just because I wanted more of this tasty chicken.
Lou’s Market & Deli kind of continues on with the great things Finks and The Dawg House did in this spot but they’re adding some more options too. They’ve only had the business for a short time and talk on their Facebook page about plans they have for the future. This is some of my favorite chicken in the area and I grab it quite often on my way through Vicksburg. J works just down the street and walks here often. She’s very excited about the soup selection now that it’s soup season.

“My uncle passed away last year and his son bought the farm … ”
… so they BOTH died?
( I know, I know, I left off the rest of the sentence, but I just couldn’t resist.)
