Five Star Pizza (Union City)
Pizza on not a Friday night? Yeah, pizza’s good anytime.
I was stuck in Branch County most of the day for work. We didn’t really have time for a proper lunch break and we were in a pretty rural part of the county so there aren’t many options anyway.
We started to head back towards Kalamazoo around 6:15. We needed to get some better cell phone reception to finish up a few things so I suggested we head back towards Union City. It was the closest town so I was hopeful they’d have better cell reception.
J had to run somewhere with the kids so she said she’d just take care of feeding them since I was going to be getting home late. That opened me up to finding something along the way.
We were heading to Union City anyway….so I put in an order for a pizza to pick up once we got there.
Five Star Pizza is a small chain of take-out delivery spots in southern Calhoun, Branch, and St. Joseph Counties. There are five locations. The Union City location is on Broadway Street on the northside of downtown Union City near Charlotte Street. The building is an old brick two story building with the bottom floor separated in to two different store fronts. You can’t miss the red and white awning with the words Five Star Pizza on front.
Five Star doesn’t have online ordering…which sucks. It actually took me calling three times to get an order in. The first time I called someone picked up but didn’t say anything. Then I got a busy signal for the next three tries. Then I got someone on the phone but they couldn’t hear me. The third try, I finally was able to talk to someone and I’m surprised they didn’t hang up on me thinking I was prank calling them.
I put in an order for a medium Meat Lovers pizza. They lady taking my order said it would be about 25 minutes which worked out perfectly.
I walked in to the store almost exactly 25 minutes after I ordered. There were two people working the kitchen. One noticed me but she was right in the middle of making a pizza so I told her to finish that first.
There’s a large order counter right as you walk in the door. There’s also a cooler with bottles of Pepsi on the other side of the door. I hadn’t paid yet so I grabbed a couple bottles of Pepsi and waited. My total with the pizza and two bottles of Pepsi came to a little over $20.
I obviously wanted to get back on the road and get home but they do have a small dining section for those looking to eat in. It’s just a few booths and a single table with black table cloths but it’s definitely a nice space you can bring the family to if you don’t want to dirty dishes at home.
I grabbed a slice as I was getting back in to the car, but for the most part, I waited until I got back to Kalamazoo to eat. I don’t really love eating pizza right out of the oven anyway so it was actually about the temperature I prefer it to be at when I got back to it. It’s still warm but not gonna burn your mouth on the cheese hot.
There was a lot of meat on top of the pizza and that’s where most of the flavor came from. The pizza was heavily topped with sauce and cheese as well but the sauce didn’t really have much flavor to it. It was just kind of there. The crust is a little thicker consistent with typical carry-out/delivery pizza. It’s soft and chewy giving the pizza that extra texture. Getting a pizza with all meat makes these pizza a little saltier and that was definitely the dominant flavor profile. Delicious, salty, crunch meat.
This is only the second time I’ve had a pizza from a Five Star Pizza. The other was a few years ago when they had a shop in downtown Marshall. The experience have been pretty consistent. It’s always better to go local than with a cookie cutter chain. In the case of a small town like Union City, it’s nice to have a solid pizza joint knowing you’re going to get a consistently good pizza.
