Roxie’s Breakfast & Lunch (Vicksburg)
J and I have been married for 14 years. Our anniversary was last Tuesday.
Anniversary’s have kind of taken a back seat to life. We’re extremely busy right now with kids activities. J’s running pretty much every night from volleyball to ice skating to soccer with the kids. My work schedule means I’m usually getting home after everything is over or I’m meeting them at the rink to take one kid home while the other kid finishes their time at the rink.
I hate that J and I don’t get time alone anymore. Even when we do, we’re so exhausted or worried about spending money we need for the kids’ activities that we end up not doing much.
We didn’t have plans for our anniversary. The weekend before L had a birthday party she was going to that would take up most of the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday is a day we spend about six hours at Wings West. The weekend after, I worked at the WMU football game all day on Saturday then had to pick up a nightshift at work on Sunday…so no time then either. We have to get grocery shopping and laundry done in those short windows we’re not running around town.
I have time off that I have to use though, so I decided to use it and surprise J.
I snuck out of the house through a back door so I wouldn’t set off the doorbell alarm or the garage door alarm on her phone and headed towards Vicksburg Tuesday morning where she works. When I got close to town, I texted to ask if she was busy. I told her I took the day off and I was in Vicksburg so if she was free, we could sneak away for a half hour or so and get lunch.
I ended up meeting her at Roxie’s Breakfast & Lunch on West Prairie Street near South Boulevard Street across from Sunset Lake. The rather large building used to be a Michelle’s Restaurant and before that a Chevy Dealership. The people that own Roxie’s worked for the owner’s of Michelle’s and ended up buying two of their restaurants (Gull Road and Vicksburg) and creating Roxie’s.
It was about 11:30 or so when we walked in to the restaurant. You come in to a pretty large dining room with a lunch counter near the kitchen. There are signs to wait to be seated but a waitress told us to sit where we want and she would be right behind us with menus.
We ended up going in to the front part of the restaurant which is separated by a partial wall and is lined with booths. The main dining room is mostly tables and chairs. We grabbed a booth by the windows looking out on to Prairie Street.
The waitress brought us drinks while we were looking over the rather large menu. I got a Pepsi, J got a Sweet Tea.
The menu is about what you’d expect from a brunch spot. Breakfast is served all day and there were a couple of specials on a menu already on the table when we sat down.
I did the lunch thing because their burgers always look so good when I see them on social media. My pick was the Brunch Burger. This sandwich is a 1/2 lb beef patty topped with ham, bacon, Swiss cheese, hash browns, and a fried egg. The sandwich was a mess of burger which made it even more tasty. The beef patty was kind of hidden by everything else but you knew it was there when you took a bite. The fried egg was slightly on the greasy side which made it slide around but it was cooked to almost soft. You got a little bit of runny yolk but it was almost solid enough to not make a total mess. The sandwich was pretty salty because there was both ham and bacon but it wasn’t an overpowering saltiness. The hash browns kind of got lost in the whole thing. They were crunchy on the ends that were hanging off the burger but the majority of them had gone soft from all the grease from the bacon, beef patty, and the egg.
The sandwiches come with choice of fries, tater tots or chips, or onion rings. I went with the fries. There weren’t a lot on the plate but the sandwich was so big and filling on it’s own I didn’t need a lot of fries.
J was set on getting breakfast and found a waffle that she was excited about…until I pointed out the specials. She went with the Sugar-N-Pumpkin Spice waffle instead…except the kitchen made a pancake instead of a waffle. The waitress brought out it and offered to remake if she wanted the waffle, but J didn’t actually care. It was still the Sugar-N-Pumpkin spice and a pancake and a waffle are basically the same thing anyway, so she took it so she wouldn’t have to wait for it to be remade.
The pancake was huge and it was covered in powdered sugar. She added on some syrup from the table as well. She said it was delicious and took about half of it home for later. It lasted in the fridge until she took it out to eat and L realized it was pumpkin spice and conned her mom in to giving it to her. They’ve both said they want to go get another one of these, but it’s not a regular menu item so there’s no guarantee it will be there next time.
J also added on a full side of bacon which comes with four strips. She likes her bacon extra crispy and this came out extra crispy. There’s a fine line between burnt and extra crispy. This bacon was right where she likes it. There is some charring around the edges but the middle is super crispy and there’s no fat left anywhere on the strip.
Our bill for lunch was about $35 before tip.
We didn’t go out for a fancy dinner or even get drinks, but at least we got to spend about an hour together…just the two of us…with no fighting over eating lunch or putting a tablet down.
We’ve actually been wanting to get to Roxie’s for quite a while. The food always looks so good on their social media and turns out, it actually is really good.
