Joe Donut (Glenview Community Ice Center)
There are a lot of early mornings on figure skating competition days. L usually has a practice before 8:00 and depending on how far the drive is, we may leave Kalamazoo at 5 AM to get to the rink.
Those early mornings almost always include a Starbucks stop. J gets herself a coffee while L gets a Refresher. They also grab breakfast to eat in the car as L really likes just a plain bagel and cream cheese.
We didn’t *have* to be at the rink at 8 AM for the National Solo Dance finals. L’s event wasn’t until 11:30 and there was no morning practice ice for her. We didn’t *have to be at the rink at 8 AM…..but we were.
We made the morning Starbucks run for drinks but L didn’t want her bagel. She saw donuts at the rink the day before and asked if we could get one of those instead.
Joe Donut is a local donut shop and burger joint. Weird combination but that way you hit all day parts. There are locations in Glenview, Mt Prospect, Niles, Buffalo Grove, Itasca, and Deerfield. Glenview has a full restaurant but they also have a small shop inside the Glenview Community Ice Center on the first floor near the main rink opened for a few hours in the morning selling just their donuts and some drinks.
A lot of people had the same idea that we did and there were only a few donuts left by the time we got to the rink. Still plenty of deliciousness to choose from though.
I wasn’t really hungry. I had eaten some of my leftover Pequod’s Pizza before we left the hotel. I was also pretty nervous. It’s weird how much my stomach gets in knots when L competes in Solo Dance. I was nervous for her and not really in the mood to eat at that point.
L and J don’t share my inability to eat when nervous. The both got a donuts then we headed up to the stands to watch some of the other skaters from our club.
L got the donut I would have picked. It’s a raised donut with crushed Oreo’s on top. The square donut is pretty large and has a thick layer of crushed Oreos and a vanilla cream completely covering the top of it. I thought for sure L would only eat half but she tends to carbo load when she’s nervous so she devoured the whole thing.
J’s pick was the Vanilla Old Fashioned. Her donut was a little bit smaller than L’s so she definitely didn’t leave me any. I don’t love Old Fashioned donuts anyway so not that big of a deal. I would have rather L shared with me.
Joe Donut is a great feature to have at a community ice rink. Saturday and Sunday mornings are super busy at these kind of places with hockey and having a place to grab a coffee and a donut while watching your kids game is such a great idea.
