You know me and gas station chicken.
There’s kind of a theme going here. I wasn’t planning on stopping for lunch, but…..
We were in South Portage and I needed something to drink. I stopped in to a gas station and the smell of chicken was overwhelming. I grabbed my Pepsi and sauntered by the chicken. It was too much to pass up.
Chicken Frenzy is in the Sprinkle Road Citgo on the corner of Sprinkle Road and Romence Road/Bishop Avenue in Portage. The gas station has been there for as long as I can remember but the chicken is pretty new. Chicken Frenzy also seems to be pretty new. I assumed it was one of those chains like Chester Fried but there is absolutely nothing online about it that I could find.
The gas station is pretty tight but there’s a food area in the back. The chicken is all in a display case with warmers. Nothing unusual for a chicken place in a gas station. The only menu I could find was combos listed above the warming cabinet.
I ordered the 4 piece tender combo which comes with a side. I picked the potato wedges. It also comes with a 20 oz fountain drink. I prefer the bottles and already had one in my hand so I just paid for that instead. The cost was a little under $10.
In addition to the chicken, there is also some of the usual gas station sandwiches in a warming tray off to the side of the chicken cabinet. This area is also where the dips and sauces are. You get one sauce with the combo.
I started with the potato wedges when I got in the car. They were small wedges which made them a lot better than the typical long, thick wedges most chicken places have. These were actually really crispy on the outside and cooked all the way through. There were quite a bit of the potatoes in the box hidden underneath the chicken. I felt like I just kept finding more and more.
The chicken was plump and juicy. The Chester Chicken I usually go to in downtown Kalamazoo puts the garlic lemon seasoning salt on the chicken so it has quite a bit of flavor. This chicken was good, but a little flavorless. It’s a blank pallet for sauce. It’s not bad. The chicken was really juicy but the breading didn’t have a ton of flavor.
I will always love gas station chicken. It’s weird that there is no information anywhere online that I could find on Chicken Frenzy…but anyway, solid gas station chicken and fairly cheap too. Nothing to complain about there.
