One of my jobs as a skate dad is to make coffee runs.

The first day of the Cherry Classic at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City was an early one. L’s practice was at 7:30 AM. She needs to be ready by the time she gets to the rink so that means getting up early, getting dressed, make up and hair down before we head to the rink.

We’re usually cutting it pretty close on time so there’s no stops. We get to the rink, I drop everyone off and once they’re situated, I take coffee orders and make a Starbucks run.

At home, I’ll usually just grab breakfast from Starbucks too but when on the road, I like to look around and see what else is there.

L really likes bagels. Her morning is made if she can find a plain bagel and cream cheese. I wanted a sandwich of some kind and lucky for me, there’s a local bagel shop near the Starbucks on Front Street in Traverse City.

Bubbie’s Bagels is in the Campus Plaza on Front Street near Milliken Drive just to the east of downtown Traverse City. The small bagel shop is one of many food options in the shopping center across the street from the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.

I could have put my order in online but I figured it was a bagel shop so it wouldn’t take that long if I just walked in.

The shop isn’t very big. It’s mostly kitchen with a small order counter up front with just enough room for a couple of people to wait for the items to be made. The menu hangs above the cashier and there is a case of house made cream cheeses off to one side.

I was just getting bagels here since I was running across the street to fill the Starbucks orders after this stop.

J and L both wanted plain bagels with plain cream cheese. Simple enough. L is kind of used to commercial baked bagels so when she it in to this one she said, “the outside is a little tough”…but that’s from the way the bagels are boiled and baked in house. To me, they tasted like any good home made bagel should taste. There was a lot of cream cheese on each half of the bagel and that she really loved.

I ordered myself a breakfast sandwich they call The Nosh. This sandwich comes with Louie’s Bacon, Tillamook cheddar, egg, and scallion cream cheese. I chose the Parmesan Black Pepper bagel for this one. I ended up eating it in the drive through at Starbucks because the line was so damn long. The sandwich was delicious. There was a big, thick layer of eggs surrounded by the cheese and bacon. I was leery of the scallion cream cheese at first and almost asked to change it but turns out, it was fine. I’m not an onion lover but the oniony flavor wasn’t overpowering so it was ok.

I will always stop at a local bagel place in the morning if I can find one in whatever town we are in. Bubbie’s Bagels was quick and it was delicious. It was definitely much better than what I would have got had I only stopped at the coffee place.
