Que Buenos Fresh Mexican Grill (Portage)

Pre-pandemic, we took our son to Comstock Early Learning Academy for preschool. We had tried a couple of others and they weren’t good fits but CELA seemed to really be working for him.

CELA is not close to our house. It’s on the other side of town actually…so that meant long car rides in the morning to get him to school after I got L to her preschool so she could get on the bus.

J and I both took different routes to get there but both of passed the corner of Sprinkle and Kilgore on our way. Everyday, B would point out the construction being done at the building on the corner that has been several restaurants over the years.

Our kids have picked up on the joke that every building being built or renovated in Kalamazoo is either a bank or a credit union and B carried on the joke every time we drove by….until we saw it was going to be a Mexican restaurant. From that point forward, he was obsessed with stopping their to pick up food. We kept telling him we would one night…then the pandemic started and school shut down.

That restaurant is the second location of Que Buenos Fresh Mexican Grill.

Que Buenos opened up in that building angled towards the corner of Kilgore and Sprinkle right on the Portage/Kalamazoo city line. The building has been quite a few things over the years but mostly pizza places. The last time I was in there was many years ago when it was a Cottage Inn…and I can’t find a blog post about it…and if I didn’t blog about it, did it really happen?

The restaurant is set up for counter service and you run in to that counter right as you walk in the door. They actually have a menu outside on the side of the building so you can get a head start on deciding what you would like before going inside.

I was the only one in the building when I stopped in around 7:00 on a Thursday night but the woman working the cash register was on the phone taking what appeared to be a very complicated to-go order. I stood there, literally, for about ten minutes, and she took this order that really should have been done online. It sounded like it was going down to one of the factories in Mid-Link and it was just question, after question, after question, after question. Finally, another woman came from out of a back office and took my order.

My order was pretty simple. Three steak tacos Mexican style without onions and an order of Beef & Cheese dip. The cost was just over $10 before tip.

It’s been so long that I don’t remember what this restaurant used to look like but I know a lot of work has been done. Heck, we watched them every morning on our way to school and every evening on our way home.

The style of the restaurant is very similar to the other location near Western Michigan University’s campus. There’s a lot of red on the walls with a contrasting white tile floor. Most of the tables are pub type tables but there are a few smaller four tops along one wall.

I grabbed my meal to-go because I was still on the clock and had some things to do in the office.

I started in with the Beef & Cheese dip which doesn’t look like much until you really dig in. The queso by itself is pretty tasty and slightly spicy but there’s a big layer of taco meat on to bottom of the cup. Each bite was like a super cheesy taco with only the best parts of said taco…the meat, cheese, and shell (chips)

Speaking of chips, I got two bags. One with the tacos and one with the queso. The chips have a home made quality to them and just enough salt to give them a little bit of flavor but not overpower whatever you’re dipping them in to.

I only got three tacos instead of my usual five. I ordered my tacos Mexican style which are made with double corn tortillas, steak, and cilantro. The tacos should come with onions but I don’t like onions. The tacos came with a hot sauce and it was pretty spicy. I typically get five tacos because I just can’t eating tacos. Of course, when I got done with these three tacos, I wanted more.

I’ve eaten Que Buenos several times at the Campus Pointe location and have always left satisfied. This trip to Que Buenos was the same. I have very little reason to go to this area of Portage anymore since we moved B to another school but I can always find excuses to make a trip out of my way for tasty tacos.
