Our last day of our Saugatuck vacation started pretty early…at least for us. We had to be out of our cabin by 10:00 AM, so at 9:00, J woke me up and we loaded up the cars and said bye-bye (or da-da as L says) to our cabin by about 9:40.

For a while, we had talked about going in to Grand Rapids and spending the day, but we were all pretty tired from the week and just wanted to get back to familiar surroundings so we decided to head home.

As we were getting in to the cars, I asked if we could get some breakfast first. J said she was hungry and since (of course) there was a place I wanted to eat just down the road, we were going to breakfast.

I first heard of HamBone Cafe on Terry’s Blog a couple of months ago. The small restaurant is south of M-89 on Blue Star Highway outside of Fennville. I actually thought it was a little closer to M-89 than it actually was, but it’s a pretty short drive from I-196.

We pulled up around 10:00 and found a pretty full parking lot. When we got in the door, we found HamBone Cafe to be the meeting spot for area farmers. The place was full of older men in John Deere hats and more came in joining the conversation as the morning wore on.

I spotted a four top near the back of the open dining room and headed that way with L. A waitress saw me heading that way and grabbed a high chair for her along with menus for the rest of us.

J’s mom had already eaten breakfast, so she was there more just because we were hungry. Still, she ordered herself an English Muffin to snack on and a cup of coffee.

For J and I, there was a lot on the menu that sounded fantastic which made our decisions even harder.

I stuck with one of my usual breakfast choices. The Steak and Eggs. The steak is a 10 oz Ribeye I asked for medium and it came out closer to medium rare…which is fine with me. The tender, flavorful hunk of meat was just dripping in it’s own juices and had the crusty remnants of a well seasoned grill. The two eggs came out just slightly runny and perfect with the beef. The hashbrowns were the surprising part of the meal to me. They were delicious. Very crispy all the way through. Hash browns are always so hit or miss with me and these were hits.

J ordered The Griddle Combo. She got her two eggs scrambled to go along with the sausage patty, bacon and French toast that came with the meal. Her plan was to share with L, but all L was really interested in was the bacon which was very crispy…just the way J likes it. The French Toast came with a liberal dusting of powdered sugar on top of the thick, gooey pieces of Texas toast. To drink, L ordered an orange juice which she also tried sharing with L while we waited.

Our bill was a little over $20 and before long, we were back on our way home. HamBone Cafe was a great breakfast stop and a great way to end our vacation. We did quite a bit of cooking at the cabin instead of eating out, so I didn’t get to as many new restaurants as I wanted to, but I’m glad we were able to hit this one up. It seems like a meeting place for the locals and with the down home cooking, it’s one of those spots you can’t go wrong with.

This Froyo craze is just crazy. It’s simply amazing to me how many places are popping up and how many people are eating this stuff up. I remember when frozen yogurt wasn’t something you could find in every downtown. The only game in town was TCBY…now, I can’t tell you the last time I found one of those places (although their website says there is one in Grand Rapids and one in Muskegon)….but crazy Froyo places are everywhere.

After a couple drinks at Our Brewing Company in downtown Holland, J and I decided to walk around for a while. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot open in downtown Holland on a Sunday night, but just a nice stroll up and down 8th Street sounded like a good idea.

We stopped in to Kilwin’s to pick up some fudge, but that was for later. J said she thought there was a frozen yogurt place somewhere nearby and that’s what she was really looking for.

Peachwave Frozen Yogurt is one of two Froyo places in downtown Holland…the other Orange Leaf, is right around the corner. Since we came to Peachwave first, that’s where we decided to stop.

Holland’s Peachwave is one of 72 locations nationwide, but the only one in Michigan. It’s on 8th Street just to the west of Central Avenue. While there wasn’t much open in Holland on this night, the place was really packed.

Peachwave is set up to like almost all Froyo shops are now. They incorporate a modern bright design and funky furniture. The froyo machines are in the back and that’s where you pick up your cup then fill up with any combination of the frozen yogurt they have at that time.

As I’ve said in other blog posts about Froyo places, this is more of a public service announcement than a review from me. I’m not really a fan of froyo so I usually don’t get anything. J, loves the stuff though so I’m more than happy to stop for her.

After filling up a small cup with several different flavors, J hit the long topping bar. This is always the time I wish it was an ice cream place because the toppings always look yummy. Heck, I sometimes consider just filling up a cup with toppings and eating that.

Once topped off, we headed to the register and put the cup of the scale. The cost depends on how much you put in the cup. J kept it pretty light on this trip keeping the bill under $5. Her usual froyo cup runs $7-8.

Peachwave didn’t really look any different to me than any of the other of dozens of hundreds of froyo places popping up across the country, but I didn’t taste it. J said it just tasted like froyo to her. Didn’t really say anything about it standing out but she loved it nonetheless.

J and I were hoping we’d get one night while we were on vacation to go out by ourselves. No baby. L has so much fun with NaNa and Gwapa so we really didn’t think we’d have to worry about sneaking away for an hour or two.

We talked about going to Saugatuck Brewing on Saturday night, but ultimately decided to wait. We’re really not Friday/Saturday night bar people anymore. Instead, all five of us went and had a fantastic lupper (lunch/supper…you know, that meal at about 3:36/4:00) at Saugatuck on Sunday.

After we left the brewery, J asked her parents if she and I could take a trip in to Holland to hit up another brewery. Her parents were alright with it, so they dropped us off at our car and we headed north.

We spent this rare few hours together at Our Brewing Company on 8th Street in downtown Holland. If you know were New Holland is, just go a few doors down and you’ll find Our.

J and I decided to hit this place up alone because they don’t actually serve food, so we didn’t know if it was a place we should take L. We would have been fine. There were actually several kids her age or younger hanging out with their parents and no one seemed to mind.

We were pretty happy to walk in to this beautiful space and find it mostly empty. There were three other tables being used and a couple people at the bar. We really enjoy more laid back places without a lot of noise so we can talk and relax.

If you look at the beer menu on their website, there are so many more beers than what they have on tap at any given time. They have at least ten taps with rotating brews.

The beers on tap this day were written on a chalkboard hanging above the bar. I was a little disappointed to not find any sort of IPA, but they did have one beer on tap that I have heard great things about.

I ordered the Peanut Butter Stout (not sure if this is different from the Peanut Butter Cup Milk Stout). It comes in a 12 oz. snifter and it’s a very dark, silky smooth stout brewed with a lot of peanut butter. I was trying to sip and enjoy, but it was so good I had a hard time putting it down. It’s a great take on a stout with the peanut butter and the chocolatey-ness of a stout.

J, who hasn’t been much of a beer drinker was very excited to see a number of Hard Ciders on tap. She was excited about going to Our Brewing Company because I was excited about it. I figured we’d have one beer then go find another place so she could get a drink she would like, but the cider kept her in the brewery a little bit longer than I expected.

Her first choice was the Fresh Apple Cider. This drink was very crispy and very apple-y. It tasted like apple juice, but you knew there was more than that going on at 7% abv. She loved it, but was excited to try another one the list as well.

Drink number two was the Streak of Virtue Hard Cider. This one was much darker than the first, but to my uninitiated palate, it tasted like apple cider again. J, however, seemed to like this one a little bit better and she ended up giving me the last few drinks of the Fresh Apple Cider to finish off as she switched to the Streak of Virtue.

My final drink was the Our ESB. Another wonderful beer with kind of a mild bitterness to it. It didn’t have the really hoppy bitterness that IPA’s have and it drank much smoother because of it.

Before leaving, we had to pick up a couple pint glasses. They have a really great/funny design with mustaches on one side of them, so when you drink, it looks to the person sitting across from you that you have a white mustache. We bought one for us and one for my mother-in-law who loved it.

We spent about $35 on four drinks and two glasses to take home. Our Brewing Company is a fantastic place to drink in downtown Holland. Like I mentioned earlier, they don’t serve food themselves, but they have a number of take out menus to area restaurants and you’re free to bring your own food in.

Date night was a success for us. I was very happy (as was J) to find the hard cider on the menu. That made things more enjoyable for both of us although just being out together is a great evening.

Is there a better way to end a Saturday night in the summer than with ice cream? After grilling dinner at our cabin, we decided to go for a little walk. Lucky for us, there was a little ice cream shop within walking distance.

Dairy Dayz is on Washington Avenue (Blue Star Highway) just to the north of 65th Street. It’s a little walk up shop that shares a building with an art gallery. The ice cream joint takes up the north side of the building and there’s a pretty large parking for those who weren’t as lucky to be as close as we were.

L has never had an ice cream cone before and one of the goals of this vacation was to get her her very own ice cream cone. We ordered her the Itty Bitty Vanilla Soft Serve cone. It took her a second to figure out what it was exactly, but once she realized it was ice cream, we wouldn’t have been able to take that cone out of her hands if we wanted to.

J’s mom also got a vanilla soft serve cone. She go the small which at most place would be well past a large. It was a towering twist of soft serve ice cream. She says she could have probably have shared with L and they both would have had enough.

J and her step-dad both got hard serve cones. Again, they both got smalls and the sheer amount of ice cream was overwhelming. J’s step-dad got a cake batter while J ordered Birthday Cake. The ice cream is from Hudsonville so you know it’s going to be delicious.

I ordered a Peanut Butter Cup Flurry. I believe they got me a large, but I thought it they were getting me a medium. The large cup was overflowing with soft serve vanilla ice cream. I thought the top swirl was whipped cream, but when I stuck the spoon in, there was too much resistance…it was all ice cream. Near the top of the cup was a pretty good mix of candy and ice cream….but in the bottom was an abundance of delicious bits of peanut butter cups.

All of the ice cream we walked away with barely set us back $17. J’s step-dad was overwhelmed and ended up putting about half of his ice cream in a bowl for later.

Dairy Dayz is a great ice cream shop in a great tourist town. It’s a little far away from the downtown or beach areas, but it’s close to the highway so it can be an easy stop on the way in or out of town.

Our big plans for the day were something J and I have been looking forward to for a while. I’ve documented on here several times how much L likes animals or as she calls them, “doggies.” At some point this winter, J came across the Facebook Page for an educational farm in Ottawa County. It’s a pretty good drive from Kalamazoo, so we never really made much of an effort to go to it, but since we were staying in the area, it became our go-to activity on our first day in Saugatuck.

The Critter Barn is in Zeeland Township just a few miles east of I-196 on Adams Street. It’s sort of easy to miss from the street. It looks like it’s just a house, but behind that house, is a pretty large farmyard with a lot….no seriously, A LOT of animals.

There’s a long driveway that leads to a pretty small parking lot behind the main barn. Today was a pretty popular day at the Critter Barn. The parking lot was pretty full when we got there and they started parking us in no parking spaces just to fit everyone in.

After we unpacked L, we found a sign that said “Entrance” so we followed it. We came to a little counter and J told the lady working that we had four adults and a one year old. We were then told there was no admission charge. They accepted donations, but they don’t charge admission. I was reaching for my wallet, but J’s mom was quicker and stuck about what we had expected to pay for admission in to the box.

From the entrance, we headed in to the barn and we were shocked with what we found. The whole complex is full of very hands on activities with the animals. In the first room we went to, there was a bunny sitting on a table. We tried to get L to stand there and pet it, but she wasn’t very interested. That’s when we noticed a room with a lot of cats. We asked if we could go in there and they volunteer said of course. We took L in to pet the kitties which she did for a few minutes before moving on.

Next, we tried an area with a bunch of ducklings. The volunteers in these areas are all kids and they are very knowledgeable about the animals and were very helpful in trying to get L to interact with them. I held one of the ducklings while L very sweetly pet it for a few seconds…then she was ready to move on.

The next room was full of bunny rabbits. There were baby bunnies and huge, fluffy bunnies that didn’t move a whole lot. We found our way to a pen with several rabbits and L finally came out of her shell a little bit. First she bent over and gave the bunnies a kiss….then she wanted to pick them up. We had to stop her a couple times as she bent over a rabbit and reached down with both hands to try and pick up a bunny.

The reason we were somewhat excited about going to the Critter Barn on this particular day was because they were celebrating the birthday of one of their pigs….by giving bubble baths to all of their pigs. They were doing this every hour and it was just about time, so we headed outside the barn to see how they were going to give a pig a bubble bath.

Unfortunately, L wasn’t really interested and we ended up running over to the chicken coop instead. For whatever reason, she LOVED the chicken coop. She would run down the ramp then run back up and squeal at the chickens who would congregate near the fence and cluck back at her. We kept trying to get her to leave, but she would start kicking and screaming every time we picked her up, so we put her back down and let her keep going with her routine.

We finally did have to drag her away and it was a little bit of a meltdown. Our hope was we could distract her with a new animal…one she could actually pet, but we didn’t have any luck. We took her to the pen with goats near the front of the barn and tried to get her to pet a goat, but she was over it…she wanted to play with the chickens. We then tried to give her some food hoping she was just hungry. That seemed to work temporarily, but our day at the Critter Barn was about over. We gave the bunny room one more try before deciding to call it a day, but not before having a blast.

The Critter Barn is a pretty amazing place. The hands on experiences here are awesome. The place is like a petting zoo on steroids, but it’s more than just that. The staff here is very friendly and very knowledgeable. Everyone we interacted with went out of their way to give L a great experience with the animals and the adults had fun playing with the baby bunnies, chicks, and ducklings as well. As soon as we got in the car, J turned to me and said this is worth the drive to Zeeland….so, we will back.

Our first full day of vacation started like most Saturday’s in the summer do for J and I. We made a trip to the Farmers Market. Only instead of our usual haunt, we found a big one along the lake shore to check out.

The Holland Farmers Market is right in downtown Holland on 8th Street between Pine and Maple Avenue. As we drove down 8th Street, I think everyone in the car was shocked at just how big the Holland market is. We could see huge crowds a block away and had no idea what we were getting ourselves in to.

Parking looked like it might be an issue at first as we were looking for a spot on 8th Street, but when we didn’t find anything there, we noticed cars coming out of a large parking lot in front of the Civic Center. We could see from the street a few cars pulling out right near the front and we whipped in that lot to take one of the open spots.

When I said a few sentences earlier that the market runs between two streets, I wasn’t kidding…in fact, there’s some spillover into a parking area on the north side of 8th Street. There are a lot of vendors…A LOT and the great thing is, because the aisle is actually a street, there’s a lot of room to walk and push a stroller. We’re usually anti-stroller at markets because there’s so many people packed into small spaces, but at this market, we didn’t have the Boba carrier and there was plenty of room to push a sroller

We weren’t really looking for anything specific. We just sort went with the intention of getting out in the fresh summer air and seeing what we could find.

The big thing I noticed is that there were a lot of people selling flowers. The market is very diverse with so many different producers, growers, and artisans selling just about anything you could be looking for at a place like this. We saw a number of large farms with huge set ups but also a large number of small farms with just a table and one person selling what they grew the past week.

One of the things that we really stopped and took notice of was the entertainment. At three different points on the street there were what were essentially street performers. Nearest to Pine Street was a tween girl playing the accordion…and she was really good. Farther up the street was a teenage girl playing a violin while tap dancing. There was a third performer a little farther up the street as well.

Since we didn’t really have an agenda when we started walking, we just went up one side of the street and down the other. There were plenty of delicious looking fruits and veggies as well as an abundance of beautiful flowers, but we didn’t really find anything we couldn’t live without. There’s not a whole lot of meal planning going on right now….we just eat when we’re hungry and find something nearby to satisfy that problem.

The only thing we ended up leaving with were a couple of donuts. We hadn’t really eaten breakfast yet and we thought we should get a little food in L’s belly before we continued on with our day.

Even though we didn’t leave with anything, the Holland Farmers Market is pretty amazing. J and I have been to several markets since moving to Michigan and this one really stands out. They’ve developed a great space downtown and they attract a lot of vendors. It’s a market that’s win-win for the community and the farmers. This would be an every week stop for us if we lived in the area.

Work always seems to get in the way of fun. Am I right, people? Ah, hell, it ain’t so bad, but on the first night of vacation, my family did have a blast while I was at work.

As I was sitting there watching the clock count down until I got a few days off to relax, J sent me a text message that they had picked up pizza and there would be some left for me when I got home. It’s like she read my mind or something. I was already looking for a pizza place that would be open when I got to the cabin.

Our cabin came with a book with menus for a number of restaurants in the area. My family picked the plainest looking menu and decided to order from a convenience store…sounds just like something I would do.

They chose to order pizza from the Lakeshore Convenience store on Blue Star Highway in Douglas. The small shop sits near the corner with Center Street just to the west of the downtown business district. The store has all the things you would expect a convenience store in a tourist town to have…but they also have really good pizza.

J and her parents put in an order for two 15″ pizzas. One was plain cheese. The other had sausage on it. The four of them ate about half of each leaving me almost a whole pizza when I got to the cabin around midnight.

I was really looking forward to the pizza because J had actually taken the time to text me and say it was “very good.” When I made it to Saugatuck, my Mother-in-law was still awake and she told me there was some really good pizza left in the fridge.

After cracking open my last bottle of Doom, I unwrapped the foil containing the leftover pizza. Even cold, I could tell this pizza was going to be very tasty. There was no sogginess in any of the slices. The crust still had a very crisp snap to it and it was cooked well all the way to the point of each slice. J’s mom and J both told me this crust was really good when they ate it warm…hell, I thought it was really good when I ate it cold. I love a pizza with a thin, crisp crust and that’s what this pizza had.

Over the next few days, we did a lot of eating along the lakeshore and had a lot of good meals. I’m still shocked that we found such a great pizza in such an unexpected place in Douglas. My in-laws did right by picking this place.

I hate the word “Staycation.” I don’t know who actually coined the phrase, but seriously, someone kick them in the shins for me.

That being said, J, L and I took a staycation this last weekend. Because of work schedules, this will probably be the closest we actually get to a real vacation this year. J’s parents rented a cabin at Kingfisher Cove in Saugatuck this past week and invited us to stay with them. J was fortunate enough to have the entire week off. I only had Saturday and Sunday off then I would be traveling back and forth to work each day from Saugatuck so I’d still have the mornings. J’s step-dad had Friday-Monday off, so he also had to bail early.

The plan was for me to go to work on Friday then just drive straight over from Grand Rapids, but J got off work early, so we decided to head towards the cabin when she got home. I was hungry and wanted to take care of that problem first and there just happened to be a place on the way that has been on my short list for a while.

Mug Shots Coffeehouse is in downtown Allegan on Water Street near just south of Cutler Street. It’s a great old row building with a large public parking lot next to it.

Mug Shots has one of those great coffeehouse feels. The floors are dark wood. Most of the tables are the higher pub type tables. You know what I’m talking about. Just a great, cozy feel.

Neither J nor I had really looked at a menu before we walked in so we needed a few minutes to study the chalkboard menu hanging above the kitchen. Right away we spotted a kids grilled cheese for J, but the two of us needed a little more time.

When we were ready, I put in an order for the Bonnie and Clyde Sandwich. The sandwich starts with multi-grain bread and is stuffed with turkey, bacon, lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomato and mayo. I left the mayo off and was left with a delicious sandwich. There’s a large portion of turkey between the two slices of bread and while I would have liked a little more bacon, what was there was very delicious and worked well even cold. The sandwich came with a choice of either chips or carrots and hummus for a side. I chose the chips because, you know, I’m a fat guy.

J did the Pick Two so she could get a salad and a sandwich. She also chose the Bonnie and Clyde and got a half sandwich with the Apple and Fig Salad. The bed of spinach was topped with bacon, red onions (left off), carrots, sliced apples, brie, toasted pecans, and dried figs. The dressing is a side of whole grain honey mustard. J said the salad was delicious. She shared a lot of the apples with L, but what the kid left her was a huge plate of fresh, delicious salad.

To round out the meals, I grabbed a bottle of Goose Island Root Beer out of the cooler while J went with an Italian Cream Soda. With L’s sandwich, the bill came out just a little over $20 and our meal was well worth it.

Mug Shots is a great option if your in downtown Allegan or if your just looking for a road trip for a delicious lunch. It’s the kind of coffee house you hope to find in every little town you visit. Great fresh food with great drink options. J was a little hesitant with me wanting to stop for lunch along the way, but I think she’s glad we did.

I hate being wrong. I’m such a guy when it comes to that. A co-worker and I headed out to the Allendale area for a job at Grand Valley State University. This is the same co-worker who obsessed with grinders. She kept saying there was a Mancino’s near GVSU and we had to go for dinner. I kept telling her no there wasn’t and I finally Googled it to appease her. She was right. There is.

Mancino’s Pizza and Grinders is on Lake Michigan Drive about a mile or so west of GVSU’s main entrance. The multi-business sits along the busy Lake Michigan Drive just east of 48th Avenue in Allendale Charter Township.

There we actually three of us today as we had an intern with us, so after finding out I was wrong, I asked the two ladies I was with if they wanted to grab a sandwich for dinner. Before I even got the words out of my mouth, co-worker said yes. We weren’t leaving the area with out grinders.

This Mancino’s is pretty close to campus, so it has a little more than just the typical Mancino’s fare. Sure, they have the pizza, grinders, and sandwiches you expect from Mancino’s, but they also have beer…..including a couple Michigan crafts.

I didn’t even really need to look at the menu, so I stepped up to the counter first and ordered the whole pizza grinder like I always do. The whole 16″ sandwich set me back a little over $11.

My co-worker actually ordered two half sandwiches. She had no intention of eating both halves, but wanted one for later. She also got a pizza grinder in addition to the Steak and Cheese grinder which comes with steak, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.

Our intern ordered a half pizza grinder….so really, not a whole lot of variety in our group.

The sandwiches took about 10 minutes to cook and we all grabbed them to go because we had more work to do. The two ladies ate theirs in the car, but mine was placed on the floor of the back seat until I could get some place to eat and not make a huge mess.

The sandwich, as always, was toastedly delicious. The two, long slices of white bread had a nice toasty crust to it and the pizza in sandwich form is hard to beat.

I’m very happy co-worker proved me wrong tonight. I never like passing up an opportunity to get a grinder and there was no way we were going to do that tonight.

L and I got up this morning and decided to head down to the Farmers’ Market. We didn’t find what we were looking for….or much of anything really, but I didn’t want to waste the trip out. Pizza Vera was out at the market as was Papa’s and a place serving up tacos, but just down the street is another food truck that came highly recommended.

Now I’m not really sure on the name, but I’m going with what I saw on the t-shirts the employees were wearing and the newest looking sign. I believe the name of the joint is Taqueria Los Brother’s (or Los Brother’s Mexican Food…saw it written both ways). There’s also some older signage and I’ve seen it other places called Taqueria Fiesta Mexicana.

Whatever you call, the little food truck is parked in an empty lot just to the south of Portage Street and Bryant Street in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood. The truck appears to be an old party bus that has been modified. They have a pop up tent just in front of the order window to keep you out of the elements while placing an order.

The menu is pretty small and what you’d expect from a Taqueria. I ordered four Asada tacos without the onions. It took about five minutes for the tortillas to be warmed and the steak and cilantro to be piled in. The cost was exactly seven bucks and I was handed a small container of green hot sauce to go with the tacos on my way out. There is no place to eat on site, so everything has to be taken somewhere else. I guess I could have just dropped the tailgate on my truck and went at it that way, but L was getting impatient and wanted to get home.

After getting L settled in to her high chair with something to eat, I cracked open box to find steamy, delicious smelling tacos. Each one was a double layer of corn tortilla and overfilled with delicious, tender steak and a whole lot of cilantro. I put a little bit of the hot sauce on each one of the four tacos, but green chile hot sauces aren’t really my favorite. Still, it was tasty even if it wasn’t quite my thing.

I gush a lot about a little taqueria in Grand Rapids that I eat almost once a week. This place almost ranks up with that place, but it’s still an incredibly delicious, authentic little food truck with fresh home made Mexican food. What’s not to like about that?
