You never realize how much you take dinner breaks for granted until you work in a business where you’re lucky if your not eating while driving down the highway. When we do get breaks, they seem extra special and that actually happened a couple times this week.
One of those nights happened to take place in Bloomingdale where I was with several co-workers. We had some time to kill and the residents of the small Van Buren County village were all heading to the local pizza joint to pick up dinner so they could eat parked in front of their TV’s watching the Tigers game.
Pizza Time is one of Bloomingdale’s only restaurants (if not the only…I don’t remember seeing anything else) and unfortunately, it’s not going to be there much longer. The employees were telling us the building is for sale and once the building is sold, the pizza place will likely disappear too.
The rundown pizza joint is right in downtown Bloomingdale on the corner of Van Buren and Kalamazoo Streets. The place looks like it hasn’t had any work done to it since the mid 80’s and the furniture has probably been around at least that long.
CW #1 and I made ourselves comfortable and got our portable workstations set up then headed to the order counter to check out a menu. He was all about veggies on his pizza and I was all about the meat. I suggested we just get two smaller ones, but he eventually said he’d just eat whatever I wanted. I like meat, so I asked him if the All Meat pizza was alright. He said sure, so he ordered a large All Meat and two bottles of Coke. The bill came to just a little over $22.
The pizza took a little over ten minutes to cook and by that time, CW’s #3 and #4 showed up and put in an order for themselves. They kept it simple with a large pepperoni.
When our pizza was ready, the cook brought it out along with a couple of plates and some silverware. It’s been so long since I’ve actually eaten in a pizza restaurant…any pizza restaurant…and I forgot just how hot a pizza right out of the oven is. I grabbed a fork and knife and went at it that way which gave my co-workers a rason to make fun of me.
The pizza had a very well done bottom crust which both of us liked. There was a lot of cheese piled on and the addition of all that meat gave it a little bit of a greasy taste which I love. The meats were pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, and Canadian bacon. I loved the taste, bt CW thought it was a little too salty…then again, he wanted all the veggies on his pizza, so it’s his own fault.
Pizza Time is a pretty good small town pizza joint. It’s just the kind of place everyone likes having in their hometown. It didn’t really jump out as great pizza, but we had a pretty good meal on a rare lunch break, so I have nothing to complain about.
