I’m not even going to try to explain why I was in Kingsley, but the fact it is, I was and I needed something to eat.  My co-worker and I sort of drove around town looking for something, but Kingsley isn’t that big of a town.  At first, all we could really find was a Subway and a bar and grill.  I was leaning towards Subway, but it wasn’t really what I wanted.

Before heading to dinner, we had to meet someone at The Rock Youth Center just off the main drag in downtown Kingsley.  As we were leaving, I noticed a pizza joint.  My co-worker and I immediately looked at each other and said, “dinner?”

A. Papanos Pizza is a small Northern Michigan chain.  They have five locations including the one in Kingsley plus a location in Germany.  Yup, this small Michigan chain has gone international.

Since we just happened to notice the store as we were driving, we didn’t call ahead our order.  We walked in to the kitchen area where a menu board hangs above the counter.  I knew I was just going to get a pizza but they do have a number of toasted sub sandwiches as well as wings.

My co-worker was leaning towards a sub sandwich, but when she ordered, she was told they only had wheat bread.  She doesn’t like wheat bread, so she had to change gears and order a pizza.  She ordered a small Chicken Tuscany pizza but was told it would actually be cheaper if she got a medium.  Her pizza came topped with seasoned chicken breast, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, green peppers, and roasted garlic.

I tried to order a medium thin crust pizza, but was told thin crust only came in large.  That was good enough for me.  I ordered a large thin crust pizza with bacon and pepperoni.  I was really surprised just how good this pizza was.  The thin crust was crispy all the way through, but it still had that light and airy crunch.  The pizza toppings were plentiful, but the crust is what really made this pizza for me.

The price for the two pizzas was just over $26 and we were both really happy with our dinner.  Neither one of us knew what we were going to do for dinner after our somewhat impromptu trip up north, but finding A. Papanos really turned out to be a great find.

I’ve been a fan of Papano’s for years. I’ve been lucky enough that my family has a boat in the Frankfort area, and that’s where the original one is.

The great thing about this “chain” is that they are consitently well above the average pizza. I could go on forever, but I will say simply this: As a self proclaimed pizza guy who has eaten pizza all across the country, there is something about Papano’s that has kept them in my top five ever since I tried them.

    Glad you got a taste!
